This program is especially good for students who wish to practice the essay format most commonly used in standardized tests. Coincidentally, this program also strengthens English vocabulary and grammar skills.
We use the five-paragraph essay to provide a basic format for high school students and International English speakers to practice grammar and writing skills, as well as critical thinking. Clearly, as an essay structure, the five-paragraph essay is limited. However, since many standardized tests require this structure, writing in this format can be excellent practice to increase confidence in writing for these tests. In fact, we use a rubric similar to the SAT rubric to supply feedback for the essays. In this program, students will receive a lesson and an essay prompt every Monday. Each lesson is short and simple, and guides the student through an important aspect of writing. After the first few lessons, teachers select lessons for individual students based on their needs and skills.

- Weekly $60

Writing About Literature
This program will help prepare students from Middle School to High School to write for advanced literature courses. College students, especially international English speakers may also find it a useful prep for basic college literature courses.
Like the Short Essay Practice program, the Writing About Literature program is individualized. Each student works directly with one teacher, and lessons lead students toward analyzing literature, properly citing sources, and using a variety of literary terms to discuss poetry, fiction, and other forms of literature. This course has the same structure of writing and revising three drafts to lead to a final polished essay. Therefore, this course has the same advantages in providing writing, grammar, and vocabulary practice, with the additional benefits of helping students hone critical thinking and analysis skills, and practicing the use of literary terms. This course is good preparation for high school Honors English classes and for Introductory College English courses.
Cost:
- Weekly $70
- Includes one lesson about literary analysis, one essay prompt, and feedback on 4 drafts of an essay. Grammar lessons as needed.
